CHAPTER 14

After Mia got home, she didn’t want to talk to anyone. Abigail had agreed to run Mia’s Morsels if Mia took the catering job. So that was one worry off her list. But Abigail had also strongly suggested Mia consider what she wanted. Abigail’s words still echoed in Mia’s head and now, as she sipped her cup of tea with the job description in front of her, she repeated them. “‘Our lives are given to us to enjoy, not do the things we think we must. If you don’t love your work, you’re doing it wrong.’ ”

Mr. Darcy looked up from the window seat and meowed.

“Apparently you agree with Abigail’s advice?” Mia smiled at the gray-striped cat. Some days he looked more gray, sometimes this striped version, and other days, Mia could swear Mr. Darcy was pure black.

She got an answering meow, then he jumped off the cushion and headed to the apartment door. As she watched, the locks disengaged and the door opened a few inches, just enough for a cat to escape. Then it slammed shut and the locks reengaged. Mr. Darcy’s resident spirit, Dorian, had taken over the cat’s care. He used his magic to open doors, refill the food and water dishes, and Mia swore he brightened the sunshine coming in the kitchen when the cat was sleeping.

And witches thought their magic died with them. Or was transferred to someone else. Not in this situation. Mia wondered if Dorian’s power was still around because his daughter hadn’t taken possession of his grimoire yet. Or she should say “again.” The girl had gotten it after the funeral but had misused the spells when she was on her own. Once she had started training with the new power, she’d decided to leave the book in Magic Springs until she could take the time to finish her training.

Mia called Grans.

“What?”

“Good morning to you too.” Mia knew the pleasantry would only aggravate her grandmother more, so she hurried to ask her question. “Do you think Dorian’s stronger because his grimoire is nearby?”

Grans didn’t respond quickly. Then she said, “Maybe. It’s a possibility. Even though Cindy has taken legal possession, she doesn’t have the grimoire. The book could be looking for its new master and, when it found Dorian, it gave him back some of his powers.”

Mia whistled. “We really need to get Dorian out of Mr. Darcy and off to his next life.”

“Don’t you think I know that? I’ve been a little busy trying to figure out why this spell won’t reverse and keeps making me lose years. Do you realize the pizza delivery guy thought I was you last night?”

Mia could hear the anger seething from her grandmother’s words. “I know you’ve been busy. This idea just popped into my head and I needed to figure out if it was possible.”

The sigh from her grandmother was so deep, Mia almost felt bad for calling today. “I know you’re doing your best. It’s my fault we haven’t finished your training.
